Our community faces a critical issue: the lack of culturally appropriate emergency accommodation for women and children. Most homeless services in Melbourne offer only short hotel stays, often leading clients to mixed-gender facilities where drugs and alcohol are present.
In response, Melbourne Muslimahs initiated fundraising for emergency accommodation but shifted focus to acquiring rental properties due to the urgent need. In April 2024, we opened House 1, providing 6-12 week stays for mothers and their children, along with case management to help them secure long-term housing, employment, and education.
The success of House 1 led to the opening of House 2 in July 2024 for single sisters, resulting in a growing waiting list. By January 2025, 49 sisters, 29 children, and 6 cats benefited from our services. Unfortunately, many women remain on waiting lists, some forced to sleep in their cars after exhausting hotel options.
In February 2025, we secured House 3 to assist more women and children before Ramadan. Our model has garnered support from organisations like Red Cross and the Salvation Army, and it has been praised by Victorian Government officials.
To sustain and expand our project, including the potential opening of House 4 later in 2025, we rely on community donations. Your support is essential to keep this vital service running.
